Dunkin’ Donuts in Hub’s North End: Fuhgedaboudit!

Dunkin' Cannolis?!!

It doesn't sound right to the cafe owners of the North End, either.

In quiet storefronts where patrons don't eat jelly donuts or order their lattes iced, opposition is amassing to plans for a Dunkin' Donuts in the heart of the city's last old-world business district.

``It would be like putting a Pizzeria Uno in the North End,'' said longtime resident Kenny McCracken, who supports a petition to keep the doughnut chain out. ``I'm sure it would make money, but it just takes the flavor away.''

City officials have not received a proposal for a Dunkin' Donuts, but Anzalone Realty is working on plans to open a franchise in the former D'Parma Restaurant on Hanover Street.

Meanwhile, a cultural coffee shop war is breaking out among residents.

`Some of us prefer regular, American Dunkin' Donuts coffee,'' said longtime North End resident Olivia Scimeca. ``It would be nice to have a totally ethnic neighborhood, but it's just not like that anymore.''

The North End has had Dunkin' Donuts franchises before, but a location on Salem Street burned down three years ago and a Commercial Street store was shut down as part of a redevelopment plan.

Opponents of the Hanover Street location say it is more difficult to stomach because the shop would be down the street from locally owned cafes that give the neighborhood a unique ambiance in a world full of cookie-cutter corporations.

``It's a neighborhood thing,'' explained Angela Guarino, manager of Contradas Coffee Shop. ``We have people who come in every morning and they know each other and talk about what they're doing for work and the Red Sox games. Dunkin' Donuts just isn't like that.''
