John Townsend & Michele Sarao - West Milford, NJ

Michele and I met in October of 2002 so I decided to propose to her on our two year anniversary of that day when we started to date. After debating for months on how I was going to do it (at a restaurant, on vacation, etc...)I finally had my mind set but at the last minute, changed my idea. We were getting ready to leave on vacation to Orlando so I used that as a perfect excuse to go shopping, see a movie, and go out to eat. While we were away I had my sister deliver two dozen red roses to my house, set up ballons and a banner, spread rose petals on the carpet, and place the ring in an agreed spot. Michele was very surprised when we got back to the house to see roses everywhere, but I played it off as just a 'two year anniversary celebration'. I asked her if she wanted to open her gifts, and she started to. There were four boxes on the table, three of which were identical. Her first gift was a 'Game Boy Advance' which she wanted for the drive to Florida, then she moved onto the other boxes. The first box had written "Yesterday" on top and inside the box was a picture of us when we first started dating and note saying "We dated". The second box had "Today" written on it, and another picture with a note saying "We Fell In Love". The third box had "Tomorrow" written on it with a note saying "Now what do we do?". Inside was a picture of me holding a banner that said "Will you marry me". That is when I gave her the ring. We then had reservations at one of our favorite restaurants. When we got there, she was surprised to see my parents and her mother waiting for us there. We had a nice dinner with the five of us, and then we drove to a nice hotel where I had a room reserved. We were both surprised when the hotel upgraded us to a suite with a hot tub in the room! Not very outrageous, but romantic.... and true! What can I say, I was a child of the movies!

Jeffrey Dewald & Margaret Neary - Philadelphia, PA

My name is Jeff Dewald; I am a Philadelphia Firefighter and the luckiest guy in the whole world. The story of my engagement to Margaret parallels the story of how we met. Long ago Margaret and I both attended Temple University. We were enrolled in the same program together but I had never seen her before the spring semester of 2003. She captivated me immediately; she radiated an energy that I couldn’t seem to ignore. Each week I looked forward to the opportunity to see her but I never worked up the nerve to talk to her. Then one bizarre night in September, it happened. I went to train station at Temple to pick up my friend who was coming to meet me for a spur of the moment trip to a Phillies game. As I waited on the platform, Margaret appeared on the opposite platform. I stared at her obsessively until finally she looked over at me. As if possessed by some strange force I sheepishly raised my hand up and waived at her. She looked at me somewhat frightened then hesitantly gave me a slight nod as if I was a stranger that she wanted to avoid. When our next class day finally came, she approached me during a break and we talked for the first time. She admitted that she wasn’t sure if it was, in fact, me who waived at her. From that day on we have been so happy together that we both feel as though we were always meant to be together. When the time came for me to propose to her I knew that I wanted to do something special. Together with several co-conspirators I asked Margaret to marry me by recreating our first night of contact. I arranged to have people watch her so that I would know the exact moment when she would be walking out onto the very same train platform, to wait for her train to go home. When she arrived I was on the opposite platform. I waited until she noticed me and then I waived, just as I had done that first night. I then dropped down to one knee with ring in hand and asked to her to be my wife with the assistance of my friend Chris who dutifully held up cue cards with expressions of my love. Despite some shocked expressions on the faces of some of the travelers, she very happily said yes and rushed over to my side of the tracks where we hugged and cried for about two minutes until we realized how ridiculous we looked and went home together.
