Taking advantage of four walks, two errors and banging out 12 hits, Dunkin’ Donuts (9-0) remained unbeaten, scoring 17 first-inning runs on its way to a 19-7 slam dunk of Saints and Sinners (3-6) in HCRD softball action Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Park.

Dunkin’ Donuts may have needed those runs as it found them hard to come by the rest of the game. It managed only two runs the next three innings on four hits. Defensively, it held Saints and Sinners to seven runs on 10 hits with only two errors.
Dunkin’ Donuts’ pitcher Kebo Bordonaba said, “I kept them out of step. That’s why the coach started me in the second game.”

Teammate and captain, Johnny Castro added, “We’re pretty much on a mission since we lost the championship last season to Breiner Machine. We got them back already this season. We play Hernando Fire and Rescue (8-1) next. We’ve been waiting for this one.”

Saints and Sinners changed pitchers in the second inning, going with Joe Correa who kept the opposition off balance with a three-up-three-down second and only two hits in the third, allowing no runs to score.
“They brought in a new pitcher and he found the plate a lot better.” commented Castro. “After we scored 17 runs, I told them to swing at anything close. I shouldn’t have done that.”
Pitcher Joe Correa’s son, Nick, playing left center, backed up his father with two running catches, both would-be extra bases, to lead off the fourth inning that would have made Devil Ray’s outfielder, Carl Crawford proud. That helped hold Dunkin’ Donuts to just two runs.

Unfortunately for Saints and Sinners it couldn’t score enough runs to catch Dunkin’ Donuts, even though it scored in four of the five innings, stranding five.

Saints and Sinners captain, Nick Correa, when asked about his running catches, said, “My guys tell me I’ve got some speed. I was trying to make a play. If I think it’s catchable, I go for it, especially the way the game was going. Anything to spark the team. Unfortunately, we came out a little flat the first inning. Our heads weren’t in the game. We switched pitchers and he was finding the plate pretty good and we put together some pretty quick innings. We figured it out, unfortunately a little too late. We’ve got to quit spotting teams so many runs in the first inning.”
