There has been a lot of talk in recent days about Dunkin Donuts pulling a Rachel Ray ad spot because of a scraf she's wearing that Michelle Malkin said "reminds her of the scarfs worn by terrorist extremists."
Here is what MSNBC is reporting
Dunkin' Donuts pulled a television spot featuring talk show host and Food Network personality Rachael Ray this weekend after a Fox news commentator associated it with terrorists.
In the ad, Ray is wearing a scarf that Michelle Malkin said in her nationally syndicated column resembled a kiffiyeh, Middle Eastern garb that is "popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos."
Dunkin's Senior Vice President for Communications Margie Myers issued a statement saying the scarf "was selected by a stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended.

time to stop buying the donuts!
The scarf doesn’t look anything like the scarf worn by Yasser Afafat. Does Michelle Malkin need glasses? I can’t believe Dunkin Donuts pulled the ad.
It’s a black and white paisley print scarf and it isnt around her head, it’s around her neck. I find the fact that they pulled the ad highly offensive.
Thinking that Dunkin Donuts supports terrorists because Rachel Ray was wearing a particular scarf is ridiculous. Let me say that I was born in this country and I have ancestors that came over on the Mayflower. I have two scarves very much like that in my closet that I bought from a flea market a few years ago. I also have some middle eastern skirts and shirts in my closet as well. If these people went into my closet or if I wore one out in public would I be accused of supporting terrosits? Last time I checked here in the US woman/people were still free to wear what they want without being stoned in public. Which is not the case in many conservative Islamic countries. So by pulling the add and allowing this woman, Michelle Malkin to dictate your policies, you have taken one step closer to being like those countries that she is so afraid of you supporting. I say run the adds, there are millions of americans who know you can buy those scarves everywhere and actually like them no matter who has worn them. Does this mean that any man who wears a mustache is a supporter of Hitler or Castro? The idea is ridiculous. Ms. Malkin I suggest you grow up and get a grip. To the executive at Dunkin Donuts, bending to pressure like this gives this woman power and that is dangerous. You people need to get a backbone and ignore her radical views. She is just looking to create a witch hunt. If you like declare a 1/2 price coffee day for people who wear scarves into your stores in support of the Rachel Rays add. Turn this into a joke, as that is what this woman and her ideas are.
I am a Viet-Nam Vet,I have a purple heart, Silver star with V, 2Brz stars, and I am 100% V.A. disable……..I dont just call for freedom,Ive paid for it,in ways you may never know….AND,AND.I dont care for Rachel Ray and I dont watch her show…..BUT!!!! I found what you did Dunkin Donuts very offensive ,So now Fox can tell people what to wear!!!!!You and Fox news are more UNAMERICAN,Then Ms Ray will ever be,,, ,just for wearing a scarve!!!! Please be real !!!! I will be starting Today to get online and pass this around to ALL the V.A. groups in America, I think its time for Vets across the United States to stand up “again ” for freedom and DO NOT BUY DUNKIN DONUTS!!!!!! PASS THIS ON TO ALL FREEDOM LOVING AMERICANS
I am disgusted and ashamed that someone could promote such a clearly racist comment about a simple scarf and a reputable company such as Dunkin Donuts would succumb. This is clearly an exploitation of someone in the public eyes ability to make a mountain out of a mole HOLE. There is clearly no attempt at supporting terrorism on the part of Rachel Ray, Dunkin Donuts or the fashion stylist. I have never posted to a blog before but I was so appalled by this fragrant act of racism and stupidity that I had to make my voice heard. I believe in everyone’s right to freedom of speech, but this is abuse!!! I have always been in support of our troops and the need to fight terrorism. I personally feel that this is terrorism in the US!!!! Forcing a company to pull a commercial because one individual decides for the rest of us that he thinks this SCARF is a symbol of terror, and that others would support this only goes to show how IGNORANT we can TRULY be. I think that if Dunkin Donuts wants to do the RIGHT thing it will put the advertisement back on the air. Stand up against stupidity and racism. Stand up against MEDIA TERRORISM and EXPLOITATION!!
This is totally ridiculous and Dunkin Donuts should be ashamed for caving in to such fear mongers. Some people DO consider Malkin and her ilk terrorists - she’s called for the murder of federal judges, she’s given out people’s home addresses if she does not agree with them, she is a dangerous woman - and Dunkin Donuts caved to the psychotic ramblings of this domestic terrorist. Congratulations for not standing up for what’s right. Which means I won’t be standing in line to buy donuts or coffee from you anymore. Shipley’s Donuts, here we come!
The lunatic fringe now dictates what is shown in donut and coffee advertising. This is a mind-numbingly bad idea for DD to buckle to Malkin’s sort of babble.
This is so ridiculous that I actually thought it was a hoax. The idea that anyone could think anything so outrageous is strange enough. The fact that a company would withdraw an ad on this basis is also extraordinary.
When is somebody going to show some backbone in this country? Dunkin’ Donuts should never have pulled that ad. DD, and Rachael Ray, and everyone else involved should have told Michelle Malkin to shove it. It is way, way overdue for someone - anyone - to stand up to these right-wingers who employ the very same fear-mongering terrorist tactics that they pretend to deplore. Are you sick of being called an America-hater, a terrorist, a traitor, and Lord knows what else, because you disagree with these totalitarians? Then SPEAK UP!! And that goes for corporate America too!
Since when we let fox news to tell us what to wear or what to do? Thanks, but i can take my decisions on my own. I just switwched to your competitor’s no more Dunkin Donuts for me or my family.
I am a conservative and a 23 year member of the military. I am appalled that anyone would think that this commercial could be a message in support of terrorism. Malkin, and anybody following in here train of thought (left or right wing) are fanatical extemist that are trying to damage this country. There are names for people such as this, home grown or political terrorist. Shame on you DD for pulling that add.
Did any of you actually read what Michelle Malkin said, or were you too busy proudly proclaiming your own patriotism as if it somehow adds strength to your position that the scarf doesn’t matter? The problem is, you’re all attacking a straw man. Malkin never said Rachael Ray supported terrorism. She specifically said she thinks it’s out of ignorance, not ideology. Her whole point is not to force people to not wear the scarf. Her purpose is to get people to understand what kind of a statement they are making when they choose to wear it. Just like the morons that go strutting around in Che t-shirts without realizing that the man they are putting on their chest wanted to nuke New York City, it’s the fact that people wear the kaffiyeh WITHOUT realizing it is a symbol of Palestinian solidarity that is the problem. If you’re going to criticize her, try to make sure you’re at least criticizing her argument, rather than just preening in your own open-minded patriotism.
That was pretty silly. Dunkin listening to Malkin? I don’t think any body else out there that can think for themselves do. Mosy of us are worried about paying for our dinuts these days. Not, what type of clothes are being worn on a donut poster. Dunkin should re-think there policy. Next Malkin might insist all dounut cups come with a swastika imprinted on them.
EE, it’s not a keffiyah. It’s a SCARF. With paisleys on it. And a fringe. Keffiyahs do not have paisleys on them, nor do they have a fringe. Keffiyahs are worn by Arab men, throughout the Arab world, to keep the sun off their heads, not by American cable TV stars making jillions of dollars. Malkin chose to liken it to a keffiyah so she could do a little casual terrorizing. There’s no argument to criticize.
Since I see Duncan Donuts all over the place here in Boston and people are always carrying food from there in the morning I thought they must be pretty good. However, there must be some special language you have to order in because every time I go into a Duncan Donuts and say “I would like a classic breakfast sandwich on a croissant with bacon” the counter attendant looks at me like I’ve lost my mind and goes “huh..?”
Seriously, I’ve tried to order there three times and out of three attempts they’ve got my order wrong once and the other two times I just gave up after repeating myself three times and left to get my breakfast somewhere else.
This morning I went in to the Duncan Donuts on Congress Street and said at the counter “I would like a classic breakfast sandwich on a croissant with bacon” and the guy at the counter said “what..?” I pointed at the menu and said “it’s the top left item on the menu. I want that. I want it on a croissant with bacon.” He looked at me like I had lost my mind and said “you want what..?” At that point I said “you know what, nevermind” and went next door to order my breakfast sandwich at the Metro Cafe.
So my question is: How do I order food at Duncan Donuts?
I certainly won’t be supporting Dunkin Donuts anymore. Pulling the ad was gutless and pandering to the opinions of prejudiced individuals. Poor form.
I am glad to see that so many of the postings on this thread recognize that DD has caved into bigotry and fear-mongering. As Vietnam Vet Mr. Smith mentions, this is still supposed to be a free country, and the Malkins of the world just do not understand that. Dunkin caved, as did Rachael Ray. I assume she collected her check for the ad; she has not commented on the fiasco, as far as I can tell.
If interested, click on the URL I’ve posted here — I have been inspired to add a Dunkin Donuts page to my otherwise-positive coffee web site.
