Dunkin’ Donuts, the Canton-based chain of coffee-and-baked-goods cafes, announced the 12 finalists who will compete for the chance to win a $12,000 grand prize and have their winning donut sold in participating Dunkin’ Donuts locations throughout the country.
Among those making the finals in the “Create Dunkin’s Next Donut” contest was Caitlyn Vandervelde of Coventry, R.I., whose creation is called Grandma’s Blueberry Maple Donut. Vandervelde’s entry is described as a blueberry cake donut with maple icing topped with graham cracker crunch.
Another entry perhaps alludes to the culinary tastes of the late pop crooner Elvis Presley. “The King,” submitted by James Smith of Mount Vernon, N.Y. is a Bananas Foster-filled donut with peanut butter icing and chopped peanuts, the Dunkin’ Donuts press release said.

Each finalist wins $1,200 and will travel to Dunkin’ Donuts’ University in Braintree, where Ph.D’s in the field toil at the chain’s culinary skunkworks as they seek to pioneer new frontiers in breakfast science and hand-held cuisine.
“The winning donut will be selected based on the outcome of the bake-off and America’s online public voting,” Dunkin’ Donuts said in its press release. “The grand prize winner of the ‘Create Dunkin’s Next Donut’ contest will be unveiled on National Donut Day.”
As sinker buffs know, National Donut Day falls on June 5. The photo that tops this post was provided by the company.
Dunkin Donuts says gift card offers from a Florida company are a scam.
The coffee giant says that e-mail messages are promising a free $25 gift card.
The company issued the following statement on it’s website:
“A fraudulent email message promising a Free $25 Dunkin’ Donuts gift card is being forwarded around the internet. Dunkin’ Donuts is not affiliated with these offers, does not sponsor nor endorse this activity and is unable to fulfill these offers. We apologize if you have received such an email with this fraudulent offer.”
Dunkin’ spokesman Andrew Mastrangelo tells the Boston Herald that this is “clearly fraudulent.”
The company has sent cease-and-desist orders to USA Research Forums, a Boynton Beach, Florida firm that Dunkin Donuts alleges is the culprit.
Mastrangelo says that the company wants to “make sure our customers are protected.”
A telephone number wasn’t available for USA Research Forums.

John Townsend & Michele Sarao – West Milford, NJ
Michele and I met in October of 2002 so I decided to propose to her on our two year anniversary of that day when we started to date. After debating for months on how I was going to do it (at a restaurant, on vacation, etc…)I finally had my mind set but at the last minute, changed my idea. We were getting ready to leave on vacation to Orlando so I used that as a perfect excuse to go shopping, see a movie, and go out to eat. While we were away I had my sister deliver two dozen red roses to my house, set up ballons and a banner, spread rose petals on the carpet, and place the ring in an agreed spot. Michele was very surprised when we got back to the house to see roses everywhere, but I played it off as just a ‘two year anniversary celebration’. I asked her if she wanted to open her gifts, and she started to. There were four boxes on the table, three of which were identical. Her first gift was a ‘Game Boy Advance’ which she wanted for the drive to Florida, then she moved onto the other boxes. The first box had written “Yesterday” on top and inside the box was a picture of us when we first started dating and note saying “We dated”. The second box had “Today” written on it, and another picture with a note saying “We Fell In Love”. The third box had “Tomorrow” written on it with a note saying “Now what do we do?”. Inside was a picture of me holding a banner that said “Will you marry me”. That is when I gave her the ring. We then had reservations at one of our favorite restaurants. When we got there, she was surprised to see my parents and her mother waiting for us there. We had a nice dinner with the five of us, and then we drove to a nice hotel where I had a room reserved. We were both surprised when the hotel upgraded us to a suite with a hot tub in the room! Not very outrageous, but romantic…. and true! What can I say, I was a child of the movies!
Jeffrey Dewald & Margaret Neary – Philadelphia, PA
My name is Jeff Dewald; I am a Philadelphia Firefighter and the luckiest guy in the whole world. The story of my engagement to Margaret parallels the story of how we met. Long ago Margaret and I both attended Temple University. We were enrolled in the same program together but I had never seen her before the spring semester of 2003. She captivated me immediately; she radiated an energy that I couldn?ǨѢt seem to ignore. Each week I looked forward to the opportunity to see her but I never worked up the nerve to talk to her. Then one bizarre night in September, it happened. I went to train station at Temple to pick up my friend who was coming to meet me for a spur of the moment trip to a Phillies game. As I waited on the platform, Margaret appeared on the opposite platform. I stared at her obsessively until finally she looked over at me. As if possessed by some strange force I sheepishly raised my hand up and waived at her. She looked at me somewhat frightened then hesitantly gave me a slight nod as if I was a stranger that she wanted to avoid. When our next class day finally came, she approached me during a break and we talked for the first time. She admitted that she wasn?ǨѢt sure if it was, in fact, me who waived at her. From that day on we have been so happy together that we both feel as though we were always meant to be together. When the time came for me to propose to her I knew that I wanted to do something special. Together with several co-conspirators I asked Margaret to marry me by recreating our first night of contact. I arranged to have people watch her so that I would know the exact moment when she would be walking out onto the very same train platform, to wait for her train to go home. When she arrived I was on the opposite platform. I waited until she noticed me and then I waived, just as I had done that first night. I then dropped down to one knee with ring in hand and asked to her to be my wife with the assistance of my friend Chris who dutifully held up cue cards with expressions of my love. Despite some shocked expressions on the faces of some of the travelers, she very happily said yes and rushed over to my side of the tracks where we hugged and cried for about two minutes until we realized how ridiculous we looked and went home together.
And the winners are…
Jeff Dewald and Margaret Neary, the Northeast Philadelphia couple who got engaged on the same train platform where their eyes first met, have won the Dunkin’ Donuts wedding contest.
“We are very, very happy,” said Neary, a 22-year-old bank employee who will get to marry her city firefighter fiance Feb. 11 at an all-expenses-paid wedding in the parking lot of the Dunkin’ Donuts at South 16th Street and Washington Avenue.
John Townsend, who operates a limousine company, and Michele Sarao, a cosmetology student, both 28 and from New Milford, N.J., won the New York-area portion of the contest. They got engaged amid rose petals and strategically labeled gift boxes.
About 25,000 online ballots were cast in the competition for the best wedding-proposal story, Dunkin’ Donuts spokeswoman Donna Walter said. About 11,000 were for the Philadelphia-area contest.
The six finalist couples – three in each of the two metro areas – who vied for the freebie wedding and Bahamas honeymoon apparently did their share to rock the vote.
“It looks like they went out and were campaigning and getting people to vote for them, which is great,” Walter said.
Neary and Dewald thanked their families – including Neary’s big, enthusiastic clan – and the Philadelphia Fire Department.
Besides the couple’s word-of-mouth and e-mail efforts, Neary’s sister Debbie turned into a one-woman publicity machine, Neary’s parents blanketed Mayfair with 1,000 flyers, and her mother campaigned at St. Hubert High School, where she works in the cafeteria.
Dewald, who turned 26 during the contest, said his battalion chief, Jim Grugan, initially busted his chops but ended up taking him under his wing and helping him get the word out in the department.
Dewald heard from firefighters he had never met, telling him that they, their wife, their daughter in Oregon, whoever, had voted for him and his bride-to-be. In bars, strangers wished them luck.
Now crunch time begins.
“The actual reality is hitting us. We have less than four weeks,” Dewald said.
Not to worry, Walter said. Celebrity event planner David Beahm will help them fast-track details such as gowns and tuxedos, and has already started planning what he said he envisioned as “a pink-and-orange extravaganza.”
Even the losers got some good news: Dunkin’ Donuts decided to give the four couples Bahamas honeymoons.
Who’s getting married at Dunkin’ Donuts? It’s up to America to make the final decision. From January 3 to January 14, 2005 folks can log on to IWantMyWeddingAtDunkinDonuts.com and cast their vote.
Six finalist couples in the New York- and Philadelphia- areas were chosen out of dozens of wedding hopefuls in the Dunkin’ Donuts Hole-y Matrimony Contest. All are vying for an all expense paid wedding at a Dunkin’ Donuts and a honeymoon trip for two to The Islands Of The Bahamas. These lucky couples include:
New York-area finalist couples
* Drew Christoffel and Mary Lapinski from Mahwah, NJ
* John Townsend and Michele Sarao from West Milford, NJ
* George Petrask and Rebecca Conklin from Bloomingdale, NJ
Philadelphia-area finalist couples
* Joseph Brobst and Jennifer Yotko from New Castle, DE
* Karen Carver and John Lester from Southampton, PA
* Jeffrey Dewald and Margaret Neary from Philadelphia, PA
TIEING THE KNOT IN A DONUT SHOP?
The average wedding can cost more than $30,000, but, according to the Dunkin’ Donuts “Hole-y Matrimony” survey,(*) about American’s behaviors and attitudes when it comes to weddings, only 32 percent of respondents characterized most of the weddings they have attended as fun. It’s no wonder that 73 percent of the people surveyed would say I DO to doing something a little bit over-the-top if they were the ones getting married.
“Couples are constantly looking for new and exciting ways to make their weddings more memorable,” states David Beahm, celebrity wedding planner and wedding planning consultant to the lucky couples who win the contest. “Dunkin’ Donuts is offering two lucky couples a truly wonderful (and fun) opportunity to both express their love for each other and make their special day truly unforgettable for both them and their guests.”
THE CONTEST
From November through December 2004, Dunkin’ Donuts asked wedding hopefuls in the New York-area (including Fairfield County Connecticut and Northern New Jersey) and the Philadelphia-area (including Southern New Jersey and Delaware) — to celebrate their devoted love in pink and orange fashion, and have the opportunity to win an all-expense paid wedding at a Dunkin’ Donuts shop. Future husbands and wives submitted their outrageous (but true) proposal story to IWantMyWeddingAtDunkinDonuts.com.
