Other than Dunkin Donuts, there are two things I’m really passionate about with regards to the Internet. Finding Free Wireless Internet and creating physical community out of the virtual world. As many of you know I’m working with a company out in California called AnchorFree which is in the business of supplying Free Wireless Internet and creating community – a great fit for me.
One of the things that we’re doing over there right now is helping online shoppers earn gift certificates for doing their normal shopping online. The New York Mets and Dunkin’ Donuts today announced the launch of a commemorative quarter series celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 1986 World Championship team. Featuring color images of six players from the ‘86 Mets team — Darryl Strawberry, Mookie Wilson, Gary Carter, Lenny Dykstra, Sid Fernandez, and Keith Hernandez — the New York State quarters will be available for three weeks, exclusively at participating Dunkin’ Donuts stores beginning Monday, June 19.
The quarters are available for a suggested retail price of $2.99 each with any Dunkin’ Donuts purchase at participating stores throughout the area from June 19 — July 9. Each week, two different players will be featured including Mookie Wilson and Lenny Dykstra (June 19), Keith Hernandez and Sid Fernandez (June 26), and Gary Carter and Darryl Strawberry (July 3). The first 25,000 Mets fans attending tonight’s game against the Baltimore Orioles at Shea Stadium receive a free team quarter not available in stores, along with a cardboard coin carrier to collect the remaining quarters.

With the Boston Red Sox season opening set for Tuesday next week, contruction workers are putting the finishing touches on a newly renovated Fenway Park. The most obvious improvements go hand-in-hand. Most seats at the ballpark will now have cup holders and Dunkin’ Donuts is opening two coffee stands within Fenway:
Fenway faithful waited 86 years for a Red Sox championship. Today, another long wait is over, as Red Sox fans and all visitors to Fenway Park can now finally enjoy a cup of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee at Red Sox home games and other Fenway events. Dunkin’ Donuts and the Boston Red Sox today announced they have enhanced the Fenway Park experience by making Dunkin’ Donuts’ famous hot and iced coffees available within the ballpark for the first time with the opening of two new “Dunkin’ at Fenway(R)” stands.
The “Dunkin’ at Fenway” stands are located within the ballpark across from Gates B and E and will sell freshly brewed Dunkin’ Donuts coffee during Boston Red Sox games, concerts and other Fenway Park events. Fans can enjoy hot Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, including Original Blend and Dunkin’ Decaf, in 16- and 20-ounce cups, as well as Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee in 24- and 32-ounce cups. The stands will typically remain open following the close of each game, so fans can also grab a cup of coffee for their trip home.
32-ounce cups of coffee? Let’s hope they also added more bathrooms as well. Play ball, and drink up.

TomTom, a Massachusetts company, announced this week that Dunkin Donuts has been added to their Point of Interest (POI) database. This will let TomTom users find over 4,400 Dunkin Donuts locations and 2,700 Baskin-Robbins locations all over the country with great ease.

For the frequent traveller, the news that JetBlue will partner with Dunkin’ Brands to serve Dunkin’ Donuts coffee on all of its flights is long overdue. As most people already know, the coffee on most airlines is absolutely awful–something that JetBlue found out when it asked its own customers:

When JetBlue learned that passengers felt airline coffee was worse than their terrestrial brand of choice, the carrier decided to bet on a familiar strategy to draw passengers: Link up with a well-known name.
JetBlue Airways Corp., parent of the low-cost airline, said Tuesday it will begin serving 10-ounce cups of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee on all its flights by the end of the month.The deal is the airline’s latest attempt to bring brand names on board its planes. JetBlue currently offers satellite television and radio with DirecTV and XM Radio and, for a $5 fee, FOX movies.
A recent survey of passengers by JetBlue found that roughly one-third considered the coffee served on airlines worse than their daily cup, and most named coffee as the drink they’d most like to improve, JetBlue said.
In the near future, look for more cross-branding deals by Dunkin’ Donuts as they begin their big push to expand the chain nationally.

When you live in Chicago the easy choice for an airline is United Airlines. With JetBlue’s announcement they are partnering with Dunkin’ Donuts to serve their coffee on all flights beginning February 1, 2006, this loyal local is going to have to weigh his options closely on future flights.

Dunkin’ Brands CEO Jon Luther was interviewed on CNBC by anchor Maria Bartiromo last week (link here). Luther discussed the purchase of the Dunkin’ Donuts chain by three private equity firms, and laid out the company’s national expansion plans. Bartiromo also brought up the inevitable clash between Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks, and Luther played up the value and convenience proposition without mentioning the Seattle-based coffee giant by name.
“You don’t need a dictionary to order our products. We’re small, medium and large, and really easy to use,” said Luther in a veiled reference to Starbucks’ cryptic cup sizes (tall, grande and venti). “We’re for mainstream America,” he emphasized.

It looks like a pretty cool event with a great opportunity to hear about Dunkin’ Donuts marketing, PR and brand management directly from Dunkin’ Donuts themselves.
Here is the info on the event. I would love for someone in the Boston area to write a short synopsis of the event and what they thought of Dunkin’ Donuts struggles and future strategies. This morning as I was reading through the latest Inc. I read an interesting article titled The Future of Advertsing is Here by David H. Freedman. David writes a column for Inc. on what’s coming next in the world of marketing and technology, and given my personal bend towards these subjects, I found this article most interesting.
According to David, Dunkin’ Donuts and McDonald’s have begun using cell phones as a medium for connecting with their customers. They are encouraging people periodically to come in purchase from them at a discount. One can assume that based upon their advertising technique they have gaterhed some significant customer data about these individuals and they are not just sending random text messages to any and every phone number (although that is possible).
Mobile phone ads are already big in some parts of Europe and Asia, and it’s just starting to take hold here. McDonald’s and Dunkin’ Donuts are among the companies that have beamed coupons to US cell phones, eliciting coupon-redemption rates as high as 17%. “Mobile-phone marketing today is where Internet marketing was in 1996 – it’s about to take off,” says Michael Baker, president of Boston-based mobile-marketing firm Enpocket, which ran the Dunkin’ Donuts campaign. “There are already more mobile phones in use worldwide than televisions and computers put together.”
It’s interesting to see Dunkin’ Donuts take this step forward with technology alongside the worlds best run fast food chain – McDonalds. By association they are raising their image, and by testing it in the Boston market, they are going about it in the right place.
It will be interesting to see what results this new advertising medium will produce for Dunkin’ Donuts and if they are good results what companies will jump on the bandwagon.
The question I walk away asking myself is two part:
- Would I want Dunkin’ Donuts to send me text messages which are essentially coupons?
- And if I would want that, would I be more likely to act on it and choose them over their competitor?
