Brett Favre….hero or villan?

So I'm on a trip to NYC this week and I'm sitting in my hotel room overlooking a small section of the city, sipping my Dunkin Donuts coffee and thinking about life. For those of you that read this blog often know that I love and am very loyal to a few things in life. My wife, my coffee, and my sports teams (Packers and Cubs).

As I'm thinking about the situation in Green Bay right now it's obvious there are so many things wrong with it. Looking out over the city here with my coffee in hand it seems to all come together.

"You either die a hero or you live [play] long enough to become the villan."

Chances are you've seen the Dark Knight by now, so you know the famous line spoken by Heath Ledger's character the Joker.

I'd be curious to hear from the DunkinDonutsTalk community what your thoughts are on this.

iPhone 3G from Apple

One of the things I'm excited about is seeing the new iPhone 3G next week. None of the local Dunkin' Donuts in my area supply wi-fi and I've always dreamed of sitting in my local DD sipping a hot coffee, munchin' on some munchkins and reading the latest tech news. So if you see me looking weird at an iPhone next week you'll know I'm reading techcrunch at blazing fast speed (or so I hope!).

Starbucks Black Apron Club

A fun little project I'm working on is putting together a number of Coffee Passport from those folks who've made it into the Black Apron Club there. My brother-in-law works for Starbucks and passed through into the club recently and it's interesting to see the level of detail Starbucks put their employees through to know their different coffee blends. So while DD makes fun of Starbucks all the time for having so many different coffee's it's nice to know there are educated people behind the counter there too that can tell you why Starbucks has so many different types of coffee.

Michelle Malkin accuses Dunkin Donuts of supporting terrorists

There has been a lot of talk in recent days about Dunkin Donuts pulling a Rachel Ray ad spot because of a scraf she's wearing that Michelle Malkin said "reminds her of the scarfs worn by terrorist extremists."

Here is what MSNBC is reporting

Dunkin' Donuts pulled a television spot featuring talk show host and Food Network personality Rachael Ray this weekend after a Fox news commentator associated it with terrorists.

In the ad, Ray is wearing a scarf that Michelle Malkin said in her nationally syndicated column resembled a kiffiyeh, Middle Eastern garb that is "popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos."

Dunkin's Senior Vice President for Communications Margie Myers issued a statement saying the scarf "was selected by a stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended.

Dunkin’ Donuts tries “green” concept

Dunkin' Donuts was to break ground Thursday on its first LEED certified restaurant -- guidelines reflecting tough environmental standards.

The latest Dunkin' restaurant, to be built out in St. Petersburg, Fla., will include energy-efficient construction and lighting, as well as water-efficient elements. It will serve as a prototype for the Canton, Mass.-based company, said Stephen J. Caldeira, chief global communications and public affairs officer for Dunkin' Brands, which operates Dunkin' Donuts.

Jeff Stukey follow up - “fee-only” financial planner

I thought it might be good to do a short follow up on the last article from Jeff Stukey. In fact as I was thinking about writing a piece a new article came out in the Wichita Eagle.

Jeff Stukey is not in the business of selling financial products. In fact, he said that is the biggest misconception about his job as a fee-only financial firm and owner of Stukey Financial Planning.

...As a fee-only firm, Stukey charges for advice by the hour and does not offer asset management. His is the only local firm that is a member of two "fee-only" associations, Garrett Planning Network and the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors. He charges $180 to $270 per hour for simple advice. He will present a personal financial plan for an additional fee, if the client wants and can afford it.

Jeff Stukey: Nation needs to start preparing for the future

This article has nothing to do with Dunkin Donuts, but it's written by a close friend. I thought those in the DunkinDonutsTalk community would enjoy reading it.

We have become a nation that believes we can enjoy constant economic growth with no pain. Not only do we expect prosperity, but we expect a constantly increasing level of prosperity.

But prosperity without sacrifice produces many problems: high gasoline prices, the housing bubble, the broken health care system, Social Security and Medicare systems headed for bankruptcy, the environment headed for disaster.

The generation who lived through the Great Depression and World War II understood sacrifice, but wanted their children to have a "better" life. However, that better life is unsustainable, according to David Walker, former U.S. comptroller general.

In an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes," Walker said that even though we don't face an immediate crisis, we suffer from a fiscal cancer that, if not treated, could lead to catastrophic consequences. One of the biggest problems is that we have massive entitlement programs that we can no longer afford.

We don't like to deal with reality. Because of that, politicians often pander instead of lead. Instead of facing the reality that the stock market is overpriced because of the housing market meltdown, they give us a $120 billion tax rebate. Instead of sustainable renewable energy strategies, a handful of congressmen in corn-growing states give us ethanol (which contributes to the world food shortage). Instead of better public transportation and more efficient automobiles, we get a proposed "tax holiday" on gasoline taxes.

One comparatively bright spot on the political landscape is our governor's courage in standing firm on the proposed coal-plant expansion in western Kansas. Good for her. We clearly need to recognize that the bill has come due for our cavalier use of fossil fuels. We must embrace the use of renewable energy and find a way to make it work.

We need leaders who have the courage to honestly contend with the many challenges we face and who are willing to lead, not pander. As a nation, we need lofty goals such as transitioning within the next 10 years to 50 percent renewable energy sources, and mandating a retirement program (in addition to Social Security) for all workers, funded by employers and employees, which would have a 401(k)-like option and a personal retirement annuity pension account option.

Now is not the time for us to shrink back and take the route of temporary, quick-and-easy fixes. We need to learn from the past and make bold, sustainable, long-term plans for the future.

We simply cannot afford any more quick and painless fixes. The future of our nation is at risk. We need to act now.

America’s Education System runs on Dunkin’

Some local Dunkin Donuts will be honoring the folks in the education community next month on May 1 and May 15 when they provide free coffee to school employees.

Dunkin' Donuts honored between 250-300 local postal workers and tax preparers with a free cup of coffee during two days in April, and hope to honor even more school employees during two days in May.

On May 1 and 15 school employees in Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Palatka, Orange Park, Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville Beach and Waycross, Ga. who show their school faculty identification at any area participating Dunkin' Donuts will be honored as part of the company's Hero of the Month program with a free medium hot or iced coffee. No purchase is necessary.

"We believe school employees play a big role in keeping American running," said Jeannie Graff, Dunkin' Donuts' Northeast Florida field marketing manager. "Whether they teach children, serve lunch or help keep the schools clean, the school faculty is often underappreciated despite their daily efforts. A free cup of Dunkin' Donuts signature coffee is our way of saying thank you, in addition to helping them stay fueled."

Deerfield Review: Deerfield police to stake out rooftop for Special Olympics

For the sixth year in a row, police officers from Deerfield, Mundelein and approximately 50 police departments in the state will stake out on top of Dunkin' Donuts rooftops May 9 to raise donations for the 23rd Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Illinois. From 5 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine, police officers will stake themselves atop Dunkin' Donuts stores at locations including 499 Lake-Cook Rd., Deerfield and 722 S. Rt. 83, Mundelein. In 2006's, police staked out 54 Dunkin' Donuts rooftops and raised $108,300. Organizers are hoping to top that this year. "Police officers in this state are extremely committed to Special Olympics, participating in various events all year and doing whatever they can to raise money for programs benefiting the athletes and their families," said Illinois Torch Run Director and Channahon Police Chief Joe Pena. The fund-raiser has grown considerably from its origins in 2003, when 12 departments raised $20,000. Dunkin' Donuts will donate $10,000 to the Torch Run fund. In addition, everyone who visits a "Cop on Top" store that day and makes a donation to the Torch Run will receive a free donut. Persons who donate at least $20 will receive a Law Enforcement Torch Run travel mug and coupon for free coffee. Other items, such as Torch Run T-shirts and hats, will be sold for varying donations.
