Regular Coffee?

dunkin-donutsMany people have been emailing us and asking us to put up a feature where people could comment on what really is a Regular Coffee.

The folks on the East Coast are telling us – especially those in the Boston area – that a Regular Coffee contains both cream and sugar. It’s a darker brown in color, but not too dark; there is enough cream there to be seen and tasted. And the sugar does not over power the taste of the coffee, but it just enough to sweeten it.

Now the folks on the West Coast are telling us that a Regular Coffee is simply straight up black – no additives of any kind. If they’re using cream, it’s low fat milk and if they’re using sugar, it’s a sweetener substitute like Splenda; but those people are definatley in the minority.

We haven’t heard much from the Midwest, but from those I have coffee with often, most of them have it black too.

If you’re interested in how I take my coffee, it’s mostly cream and sugar with some Dunkin’ Donuts coffee added. Generally when I’m done doctoring it, it’s whiter than a Chicago snow fall.

Let us know what how you take your coffee and what you believe a regular coffee contains.

How can it be that for a 50 mile radius every dunkin donuts but “one” has the coffee club cards? I faithfully buy 2 extra large coffees and 2 breakfast sandwiches plus 10 donut holes for my dog 5 days a week. Thats $13.13 x 5 days = $65.65 dollars a week. You would think that I should be able to get club cards. But everyday I keep asking and they keep saying that “they are out of them today” Months have gone by and still the same answer, “out of them today” I always thought that it was “tomorrow that never comes” I guess that I will just have to start getting use to Tim Hortons coffee!!!

I live outside of Boston and always ask for a Medium hot, 3 & 3. On a regular basis, the staff tells me you can just say regular. When I don’t say 3 Cream & 3 Sugar it’s darker and not sweet enough. It’s the only way they get it right!

  6. Heston says:

Adding cream and sugar to coffee is abominable and defies all logic. It would be just as reasonable to add mustard and pepper. Coffee should be savored in its natural state. If you don’t take it black, you don’t really like coffee. It’s sad that many people turn great coffee into a liquid pastry.

Having lived in NYC, I can attest to the fact that a “regular coffee” consists of milk and two sugars. As a rule, New Yorkers do not use half-and-half, although the remainder of the Northeast does. I always specified that I wanted black coffee to avoid all calamity. I cannot predict my response upon sipping a cup of coffee that’s become a milkshake through the addition of cream and sugar. I might require medical attention.

  7. Heston says:

In my previous post, I neglected to advance the strongest argument for taking coffee black: simplification. There’s no doubt that adding cream and sugar complicates one’s existence. I know coffee drinkers who avoid Dunkin’ because they don’t trust employees to mix their coffee correctly. Thus, they go to Starbucks (disgusting), where they can be masters of their own condiments. Shun the cream and sugar and the problem is eliminated. Coffee also maintains its heat better when no cream is added.

Try taking coffee black for two weeks and you’ll never turn back.

If “regular” meant black, then what would black be? I think of regular as small amount of cream and sugar, and you could add more if you desired.

I just started drinking coffee and I have not been able to figure out exactly how I like my coffee. I get it made one way and it is delicious, I go to another place and try that same combination of coffee, milk, and sugar, and it does not taste good. This is very annoying but I think I like my coffee strong with milk and a little bit of sugar. I do not like it very sweet, and that is usually how it comes, but every place is different.

can some please tell me where I can get the cream they use.

  27. Ni says:

For me, Regular (or Regulah) is w/ cream and sugar
Light is with extra cream & a little extra sugar.

Regular decaf is decaf with cream & sugar
Light decaf has extra cream & a little extra sugar.

So . . . black is black – decaf or regular.

    It is so-o-o-o-o easy!

Does someone know what type of creamer Dunkin’ Donuts uses? I use a Bunn coffee maker at home wich get the coffee hot (200 degrees), use generous amounts of sugar, but half-and-half just can’t be the right creamer. They something much more rich to get that sweeter taste.

Does anyone know the creamer type?

    Thanks!

  29. rob says:

The creamer used my dunkin is an 18% light whipping cream. The brand is Country Fresh but I use deans. it tastes the same.

  30. Nick S. says:

Does anyone know if the 18% light whipping cream (either Country Fresh or Dean’s brand) can be found at most any grocery store like Kroger, etc.? How much do they put in with say a large cup of coffee? Just a splash or a fair amount? How much sugar goes into a large coffee? I’ve heard as much as 4 teaspoons.

    Thanks!

  31. rob says:

you know I just found 18% in Jewels/Albertsons last week. until then I was able to bribe the local dd’s to sell me quarts for about 5 bucks. OUCH! But now I need to know how many scoops of beans per pot. Does anyone know?

  32. Nick S. says:

It seems that Dunkin’ Donuts coffee is not very strong. My best estimate is two scoops of beans per pot. I’m curious how much of the 18% creamer to use and how many teaspoons of sugar for a large coffee?

    Thanks!

My recent visit at Dunkin Donuts in NJ was a bad experience, the coffee was burnt and it tasted like it had a sugar substitute mixed in it. I can’t stand an artificial sweetener. In addition, there is no consistency, some places are better than others. From now on, I will drink Nescafe.

  39. dunkin donuts has best cooffe in chicago and they jelly donut i buy your coffee all the time

  40. Sara says:

In my experience, the regular being cream and suger, and light and sweet being just as it says it is, is a northeast coffee lingo thing. Because no where else in the country (Im from NJ) when I have gone in to a Dunkin Donuts and ordered a regular coffee have they known that that means I want regular coffee with cream and sugar (disappointing). So if you are not in the northeast just ask for 2 creams and 2 sugars.
